The Future of Lauren's Religion

Lauren has shown people her book. She’s no longer the only one who’s aware of what she’s created. I think on their trip north Lauren will end up amassing a following. People she runs into on the same path as her. Looking for the same new beginning. This is how her religion grows. Due to the lack of paper and other resources I think the Earthseed verses are going to travel mostly by word of mouth. Also we know that a lot of people are probably illiterate so written text wouldn’t mean much to them. I think spreading the religion through speech could cause a few things to happen. One, it will get much further, the more people talk about it the more people know of it and spread it even further. Two, it will change. If there’s only one written version or even only a few written versions, the spoken version, the version that will spread further and faster, will change as it moves away from Lauren. I think this is really interesting because Lauren’s idea of “God is Change” fits perfectly into this situation. If God is Change then the rules of the religion should change too. I also think that with these changes it’s possible that the original point could easily be lost but then according to the idea of God is Change the changed version is just as fitting as the original but at what point do the changes go too far? Can it change too much? Plus if the verses change when being passed around then the new version must be there for a reason, someone must have thought that it would help them more if it was different and maybe that's a good thing. If changing the verses slightly helps people more then maybe it is a good thing. Maybe it’s meant to change. Which brings back the point that if your religion is based on the idea that God is Change then it should be expected that the religion will also change? This has gotten very convoluted. What do you all think is going to happen with Earthseed, the book of the Living?

  1. I definitely agree! I think that her religion will spread amongst the people she runs into on her journey. I also think that she means that you should submit to change and accept it.

  2. Yes! This IS convoluted, and I really struggle to figure out where Butler is going with this, though it does make me think. If religion changes, is it still religion? Is there no constancy at all? How can a religion based on the idea of "God is change" give people what religions tend to give people? I didn't answer any of your questions; just asked more of my own. :D
