How Could This Really Happen? Climate Change.

I think that the ecological disaster that sparked the Parable dystopian world is much more likely than the previous two books. Especially in America because there is a fear of the government being too powerful that a lot of people have. We have an entire political party that has a focus on lessening government control so I don’t think we are likely to end up in a dystopian world with a strict, overly powerful government and no freedoms. Whereas an ecological crisis and economic crisis that occurs because people aren't prepared is much more likely. We have known about the consequences of climate change for a very long time and we have been watching natural disasters get worse and worse. Last year had the most recorded hurricanes ever and there were huge fires across the world. I don’t think that there is likely to be one big event that leads to the downfall of civilization but  a lot of little things that get ignored but continue to build on top of one another could. If climate change continues basically unchecked we will reach a point where in certain areas it will be too hot to go outside for any extended period of time without dying. The rising sea levels will drive people in-land which will lead to overcrowded cities and a lack of jobs, the rising temperatures and droughts will lead to food shortages and even less ability to work, and the list goes on. The premise of Parable of the Sower isn’t really that far off from what could happen if big changes aren’t made in the way we approach climate change.

  1. Excellent points. Many people are still in massive denial about climate change, or they know it's a fact but they shrug because they think it hasn't yet really affected them and so never will. But all the things you mentioned here are truth. Massive die-off of bees is a huge one -- without pollinators, crops fail. Ugh, depressing, but at least we have people of vision who can imagine where this might go and possibly how we might prevent it?? One hopes...
